The Cosmic Metaphor:
To the ancient priesthood, the synodic month (~29.53 days) was an exact theatrical mirror of the Osirian mythos recorded on the temple walls of Dendera, Abydos, and Edfu:
The Waning Moon (Days 16–30): The lunar disc shrinks day by day, embodying the dismemberment of Osiris at the hands of Set. Each passing night snatches away a fraction of the divine body, dragging the god down into death, mummification, and the darkness of the underworld (Duat).
The Dark Moon (Psedjentiu): The morning the old crescent vanishes before dawn marks the moment of pure silence and absolute mortality. Osiris rests inert within the primeval waters of Nun.
The Waxing Moon (Days 1–14): Isis combs the marshes and deserts of Egypt, discovering one of the 14 severed limbs on each successive evening. With each waxing sliver, another piece of the god’s anatomy is recovered, consecrated at a regional shrine (nome), and joined to the sacred frame.
The Full Moon (Metqet, Day 15): The divine body is completely whole. Horus presents the healed Eye of Horus (Wedjat) to his father, breathing life back into his spirit and crowning him eternal sovereign over the ancestors.
